Biodiversity of Clyde River in Batemans Marine Park focus for researchers

The Clyde River will be the next area of extensive study by researchers from the University of NSW and the Batemans Marine Park.

The researchers have been studying areas in the Batemans Marine Park as part of an Australian Research Council grant worth over $1.1 million.

Manager of the Batemans Marine Park Dr Brendan Kelaher said the study would look at the effects of human impacts on estuaries, including those in the Batemans Marine Park. He said work had already begun in Wagonga Inlet at Narooma, and the Clyde River near Batemans Bay would be the next focus for the research team.

“With Chief Investigator Dr Emma Johnson and her team we’ll be looking at how multiple stressors interact and ultimately affect biodiversity. This research will fill this knowledge gap and provide clear guidance for coastal management not only in NSW but internationally.

“Fieldwork involving surveys of marine life and sediment sampling began last week in Wagonga Inlet, which is within the Batemans Marine Park.

“We’re looking forward to starting work in the Clyde later this month. This work is not a one-off event, but will be ongoing for the next three years.

“We are excited to be involved in this research which will not only provide funds for world-class research within the Batemans region, but also provide training for full-time PhD students and postdoctoral research fellows,” he said.
